With all due respect to the Chrome team, I just want to go on record somewhere saying this:

Over the last year or so Chrome has become the WORST performing application on my system. And I run Adobe (Photoshop) applications, so that's saying something.

This browser was perfect until the inevitable march towards added features that a browser simply does not need.

There...I feel a little better.

Rafael L. said...

What features were added that made the browser heavier Shane? What you said makes no sense.

You're just experiencing web pages becoming heavier everyday using modern web development standards, not the browser.

So this new version of Chrome does not include the newest version of Pepper Flash (11.8.800.170)? Or is the Chrome team assuming (incorrectly) that Chrome had already updated Pepper Flash as stated here?

If anyone reading this has updated their installation of Chrome (on Windows XP in particular), I'd appreciate being told what version of Flash that http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ reports you have installed.

@ mehnonymous

I'm on windows 8 but I can confirm that at least on there that Chrome has the latest version. Sadly though I don't have anymore PC's that have XP so I couldn't help you with verifying XP.

Youtube videos still no not play in fullscreen.
Flash video performance is by far the worst, even Firefox does this better.

Wow google ..

@ZtrydR & @Hossam Khelili

Thank you. I have since had the opportunity to update Chrome on my XP PC and it, too, now has version ...170 of Pepper Flash.

Seriously, when are we going to see a fix for the back button/previous page bug, that is affecting sites such as Amazon...?

It's so infuriating, and I know there are many people experiencing this bug; go ahead, visit Amazon and try going back a page!

Shane - with all due respect to you, I would suggest that you may have other issues coming into play here. Chrome, I would say, is one of the BEST performing applications on my PC and I'm curious about "the march towards added features that a browser does not need" - such as what? I consider Chrome to be light on features if anything and add what I want by using extensions (as few as possible). NB: Overloading Chrome (or any browser) with add-ons will affect performance.

Hi guys,
That canvas break was really problematic for us, could you please add some more complicated canvas based tests to your regression suite to try and prevent this sort of thing for the future?

With the most recent update to Chrome it has taken a significant nosedive in performance for me. I used to be able to open a new tab and it would instantly show up with my most commonly visited websites. Well, with this update it now takes up to 5 seconds to load the tab. Obviously, 5 seconds is not that long, but compared to how it was before this is a serious performance hit and I'm less than impressed with the change.

The latest version of Chrome on the Mac is breaking SSL certificates on my sites:

Works fine if every other browser. Was fine before Chrome auto updated.

Please fix this as this is causing major issues!

Thank you.

Why the hell have they changed the NEW Tab page, AGAIN?

The Apps page is no longer available from the NT page itself, but is now a stupid little button towards the top left of the browser in the Bookmarks Bar.

What is the advantage of that?

In what way does that make Chrome better, more efficient or easier to use?

Please change it back!!!

Also, the NEW Tab page now has smaller Icons for most visited pages as someone has seen fit to add the Google LOGO, which seems to briefly show in full colour, then goes to white, PLUS a Google Search Box, just like the Google Home page.

AGAIN, what is the point of that change when we have been able to simply search directly from the address bar for ages???

So, thats at least 2 POINTLESS changes that I've spotted within a couple of minutes of the update taking effect.

Come on Google/Chromium Project. If you're gonna make changes to the interface, make them something that is actually useful and worth the effort in changing the program code.

Simple aesthetics that serve no logical purpose or make any needed improvement is wasting your developers time, not to mention ours in having to learn all over again how to do things just because you think it's a good idea to keep us on our toes.

In my opinion, aesthetics are something that rarely NEEDS changing. If something needs to be ADDED, then fine, but not just moving something between one area, that worked perfectly fine beforehand, and another.

Stick to changing and updating the ESSENTIAL underlying CODE that affects browsing and security and leave the interface ALONE.

PS.

@TacticalTimbo

Amazon.co.uk is working fine for me with this version of Google Chrome. Never noticed the problem that you mentioned before anyway.

Perhaps you have a problem with your computer system somewhere else or you are using a different Amazon site to me.

Another thing regarding the NTP. Where has RECENTLY CLOSED TABS gone?

Iain Marshall said...

Oh, I've just found 'Recently Closed Tabs'. It seems to have been moved to the Triple Bar Button (Top Right Corner) under 'Recent Tabs'.

AGAIN, I ask the question, WHY has this been changed?? There is NO benefit in this whatsoever. It just frustrates users in having to find things all over again.

Two things that WERE together at the bottom of the the NTP have now been move to opposite sides of the browser i.e. TOP LEFT and TOP RIGHT.

It just makes no sense whatsoever.

Next they'll be removing the NTB button, to the right of the existing TAB and making us go back to opening a NEW Tab from that Triple Bar Button. Still don't get why that Icon was changed from the COG Icon either. Change for change sake.

I'm beginning to feel that it's all just a cover up for the lack of USEFUL functionality changes and efficiency improvements in the underlying code and they (the developers)need to be seen to be doing something new in each version to justify their existence.

If you've not already noticed, I'm getting a little annoyed with these needless changes.

What will I find next???

I shudder to think!!!

Why u guys removed the function to look in the recent pages that i've looked from the new tab page... And the icons are much smaller, this is kinda... uh
And, I can't really restore the crashed tabs because of the change.

MAN FUCK CHROME 29... There's so much BS I don't know where to start... First why consolidate search with recent websites? The point of chrome is you have an omnibar and thus can search the web quickly... recent pages are only an arrow away... why do you fucking need both on the same screen? Even if you use recent websites as your newtab page you've ALREADY got the omnibar.

Secondly chrome bypasses the update freezer I've got NO MATTER WHAT. What a piece of shit, it says chrome will not update, so I install an old version, and it autoupdates... Forcing your stupid shit down our throats...

Next, reinstalling got rid of my Adblock Pro extension(not plus) which is better in every aspect, including editing pages with blocking rules... Now I don't have Adblock Pro which ruins my web experience. And adblock Pro isn't listed under extensions.

Last why the fuck is there an app button? This is obviously a ploy to get people to buy android because putting a button between you and a feature AUTOSETUP beforehand is only a nuisence...

Fuck you people... greedy ass bastards, Chrome is fucking dead to me.

I like the new Chrome. I don't experience it being slow on ANY of my machines. I love how the new tab page is now. Sure, there's the omnibar so there's really no need for search (unless you switched your omnibar to search another engine) but before the new tab page only contained those web app icons and it looked bad, now it's got a nice UI.

i agree with everything that has been said about the new tab page and the app page. it is utterly stupid to turn big left and right arrows into an app button and the back button. stupid stupid stupid. i want to revert but i cant because of auto update. well done for makng chrome an nhelpful, difficult to use, not flowing browser.

The "Instant Extended API" sucks, the new "New Tab Page" sucks, who designed this may never use Chrome as default browser.

JackTang said...

This is the worst update of Chrome from its first release. Please change the new tab to the original one, and let "Recently Closed Tabs" go back! How could you just close and destroy user's opened tabs without warning anything? After this "stable" release, I'm sure Chrome is surely getting sucker and sucker.

Please return to the old "New Tab". Thank you. New "New Tab" from Google Chrome 29.0.1547.76 is suck.

Where is the option bottom "Recently closed" from "New Tab" and "Recent File" -> "Recently Closed Tabs" (CTRL + SHIFT + T), from menu, don't work to re-entry in Google Chrome ver. 29.0.1547.76?
Please refit again option bottom "Recently closed", in the "New Tab" and / or "chrome://apps" ("Google Apps"). I need this option.

Unknown said...

I can't believe this is actually happening. For years now, we've asked for the option to open instead of save a download. That has still not been done but you can find time to change something like the New Tab Page that your users were perfectly satisfied with, and changed it to something that makes no sense and adds no value to anyone but Google. Seems Chrome is now no different than Internet Explorer. It exists solely for the interest of Google.

Hi ALL,
for those of you who want the OLD New Tab Page back, then do the following:

Type "chrome://flags/" (without the quotes) into the address bar and press enter.

Next, press CTRL+F to bring up the search page dialogue box (top-right of the browser window) and type or copy/paste "Enable Instant Extended API" (again, without the quotes). Change the setting to 'Disabled'.

Finally click on the 'Relaunch Now' button at the bottom left of the page.

You will now have the OLD NTP back with the Apps and Recently Closed Tabs at the bottom of the page again, where they should be, your most visited pages will have reverted back to the larger size, the way they should be, and the Google Logo and Search Bar will have disappeared, who needs them anyway !!

Enjoy!!

Use this workaround whilst you can because, I guess, Google will remove the option to do this in a future update.

Dorian B. said...

Thank you very much Iain Marshall ... but anyway Google Chrome become sucks, if Google doesn't make first a market survey for miscellaneous changes.
Thank you again Iain Marshall for your information.

Ther new NTP is so stupid. What's the fucking point of the huge ugly google logo? And why do we need an input box in the page which is just a link to the ulr bar?

Alski said...

I have to agree with a number of the other posters here. Chrome has become almost as bad as FireFox and (yes, you can shreik) has actually fallen behind IE 10. I'm not sure what you guys are doing to it, but it's time to re-evaluate your methods of performance / compliance testing perhaps. This is horrible...

worst update ever...
