Chromecast Update

Today, we are pushing a bug fix update to Chromecast devices to improve performance, reliability and security. The update will roll out over the next few days and will happen automatically; users do not need to take any action.

What's the new version or build number?

What was the OLD version or build number? And how can you even tell?

Hm, so if we remove the cruft, the changelog is about 5 words long. I suppose "Stuff changed" would be shorter.

Open the Chromecast app on your phone/tablet, then select your Chromecast from the list which will bring you to the settings screen for your device. The last line beneath the IP address on the bottom should show the build number.

Mine is 12072.

Mine is the same Scott. Let's see if anyone else posts something different.

"improve performance, reliability and security"

Care to elaborate?

Bug: Device will not accept 64 character hex wpa2 personal passkey. It limits this to 63, but that should only apply to ASCII passkeys.

A comment on reddit shows that the updated build number is 12840, for anyone interested.

Please provide support for WPA2 Enterprise. Right now I have to create a completely separate WiFi network just for CC, since it's the only one that doesn't WPA2 Enterprise (PEAP+MSCHAPv2).

+1 to support WPA2 Enterprise. This would be a nice alternative to deploying hundreds of AppleTVs

If you're not getting the update, try this.

1) Unplug power (USB or Power outlet) to Chromecast.
2) Wait 15 seconds, plug-in power again
3) You will see update being applied, about a minute
4) Chromecast will reboot again and connect to your network

Improvements I've definitely noticed is how much quicker the Chromecast app on my Windows machine finds the dongle on the network.

Netflix switch is still slow as it was.

Still cannot cast my entire screen.

Testing other stuff and will send feedback.

Tarun Dhadwal thanks for the tip. That worked for me.

Has the "Can't Sideload music" from Google Music on Android error been addressed in this fix?

Hi,
I'm running my Chromecast in the UK and immediately ran into an issue with wireless channels.

In Europe there are 13 wifi channels, but in the USA only 11. Chromecast will only recognise 11 channels, so if you have your router set to Channel 13, as I originally did, Chromecast won't be recognised.

Hope the developers are listening and fix this channel issue before shipments to the UK and Europe begin.

Blanking the TV screen.

There is no way of blanking the TV screen when playing just Music.

There is an Android app called Screen Saver, that does this.

It would be nice if Chromecast offered this as an option when in Google Play Music.
