Folks, where are the Apps in the new tab page gone ?

Remco Bakker said...

My curtain.js script now behaves very strange. Anchor tags aren't really working the way they should:(

Not liking this new version simply due to the usability issues. Put the bookmarks bar back to the top of the NTP and put the apps back on the NTP.

What is this...?
"Enable desktop cloud policy Mac, Windows, Linux
When enabled, cloud policy will be loaded for signed-in profiles."

Cloud Policy...?

Wow, now Chrome is disabling extensions I didn't install through the Chrome webstore? Not cool

Evan said...

@Astrophizz
If the extension you're referring to is using manifest version 1, this is nothing new. Google published the schedule to deprecate manifest version 1 a while ago. See http://developer.chrome.com/extensions/manifestVersion.html.

@Evan

No, it's flat out disabling ALL extensions not installed through the store by default. It does let you know about it though, so no real harm done.

On the other hand, my chrome now insta-closes whenever I try and do anything, so that's progress?

With option "enable desktop cloud policy", sending links to mobile devices doesn't seem to work over the action badge UI.

@Alex
I'm able to install unpacked local manifest version 2 extensions without issue. Manifest 1 extensions tell me the "manifest is missing or unreadable". I'll be happy to try installing some extension to confirm what you're seeing, if you like.

When I perform a search using the Omnibox, the search page isn't recorded in History. So if I browse to a search result and then hit back, I don't go back to the search results page. I go back to the page *before* the search results (often a New Tab page). Irritating. Filed at https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=165404&q=is%3Astarred&colspec=ID%20Pri%20Mstone%20ReleaseBlock%20OS%20Area%20Feature%20Status%20Owner%20Summary.

I'm also seeing some PDFs take me to a black (really gray) page. I can't find a rhyme or reason for it yet...

Hmm... This is probably from a flag I turned on ages ago but after last update this happened:
https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/aUE1oOCTEPk1MXIGn08Hrnt893DLc64VfNhQa0rCN08?feat=directlink

When I type it removes that half Google page anyway so it's just useless and makes clicking those tiny (specially when I'm running Chrome resized to 800x600) app or history icons really hard...

Hey there is a big problem with Chrome Themes. Please Fix it.

the NTP change seems unnecessary. omnibar already does google search, that's one of the main pulls for chrome, right? so you took away some visibility for my apps and "most visited", which i use all the time. Secondly, why aren't you using all available white space to show my apps and most visited? I get a small frame with two rows of icons...

the way it was before was bigger and brighter, and a lot more useful. I could switch from apps to "most recent" by bringing my mouse to the side of the monitor, rather inaccurately, to switch. Now i have to accurately move my mouse to a tiny hyperlink...

And my bookmarks were at the top, so my long list of bookmarks dropped down properly, like every other list on the internet (or my computer for that matter) work. Now it's at the bottom, where my mouse never is (since all the other buttons are at the top), and my lists expand upward. A very unnatural feeling.

The only reason i could possibly see for these changes is if you are using it on a small device, where your mouse (or finger) is always pretty close to everything already...

also, where is my "recently closed tabs"? without a doubt one of my most used features. including the way it was implemented. easy to use and helpful. now i just don't have it? or it's in an odd place that isn't easily accessible (and I haven't found)?

At the very least you should just include several versions of the NTP, and let your users decide what they feel is most useful.

Funny how these few things completely streamline my daily activities at work, because I depend so much on my browser to get things done.

Jesse Marano said...

and, I can't rearrange my app icons...
Makes the NTP less useful to me.

The new NTP is not good. My variant shows unnecessary second search box, VERY unnecessary big GOOOGLE label. And only small subset thumbnails of my favorite sites (yes, i know i can scroll... but i don't want to, i want one click access).

And also i noticed that chrome removed text box from Google search page results. It is also a bad idea, guys. User focuses on the page, INSIDE the page, and URL field is out of user focus. What you have done, you tried to extend user focus to whole browser window... but it won't work. Not speaking of seacurity concerns (some sites would like to emulate such bahaviour in some way).

Back to stable channel. I hope such changes will not go into stable.

Wow. What a huge step backwards. What is with the HUGE google and tiny Most Visited previews? And losing "Recently Closed" and "Other Devices"? Am I missing something?

Perry said...

I found the other devices in my Upper Right menu under "Recent Tabs", which is an odd place for it, but oh well. But it looks like you can only reopen the most recently tab or window, unlike before where you could reopen several recent ones.

Jesse Marano said...

Now i cant use the copy/paste of my search text
It pastes as a URL.... who doesnt copy/paste thier Google search text at least some times?

sykosoft said...

Serious issues with this build.

1. Hate the NTP. Almost unusable.
2. Miss the ability to see several recently closed tabs, and what they were
3. NTP with a huge search box? And only half the time? Other half of the time it has thumbnails?
4. Attempting to use the omnibox has been extremely painful. It won't work for existing tabs about 70% of the time.

Many many more problems.

I don't really like the new new tab page. It is too small for my large desktop computer, and the apps can't be moved around.

Matthew Holder said...

Really bad bugs in this version. NTP is completely useless now. Omnibox is broken badly. type a search and it randomly replaces what I typed. If it doesn't replace the text, it takes me to whichever random web page it decided that I wanted when I press enter. If you have already opened content on a tab, trying to search from omnibox does nothing. I've used dev channel since its inception but I'm going to have to switch off of it because it's completely unusable for me right now. :/

I agree with all other - the new NTP on Windows 8 is a total disaster! (on my Win 7 machines I still have the good old one). Please say the this was just a mistake and not the future of Chrome!!
I really loved the "other devices" section as I have 3 computers, an phone and two tablets that all run Chrome. I love being able to surf around on my iPad from the sofa, and just leaving the interesting pages up, and being able find them on my work computer's "other devices" the day after. This is all gone now :(

And why on earth did you put a search box on the NTP? We have the omnibox, and those who want to put google as the start page have been able to do that forever in the settings.

So please, get the old NTP back on windows 8...

Losing "Recently Closed" and "Other Devices" options on the NTP is not user friendly. I use the "Recently Closed" option a lot with frequent OS restarts. Also I have glasses and the tiny ass thumbnails does not help one bit. Get rid of the giant google search box, make the 6 thumbnails big again, and bring back the "Recently Closed" & "Other Devices" options and I will be good.

I do like the full width drop down box with the omnisearch. I think that is a good graphical and usability upgrade.
