Chrome Stable Update

The Chrome Stable channel has been updated to 17.0.963.79 on Windows, Mac, Linux and Chrome Frame.  This release fixes issues with Flash games, along with the security fix listed below.

Security fixes and rewards:

Congratulations to PinkiePie (aka PwniePie) for a beautiful piece of work to close out the Pwnium competition!

We’re delighted at the success of Pwnium and the ability to study full exploits. We anticipate landing additional changes and hardening measures for both CVE-2011-3046 and CVE-2011-3047 in the near future. We also believe that both submissions are works of art and deserve wider sharing and recognition. We plan to do technical reports on both Pwnium submissions in the future.

  • [Like a b-b-b-b-boss!!! $60,000] [117620] [117656] Critical CVE-2011-3047: Errant plug-in load and GPU process memory corruption. Credit to PinkiePie.

Please see the Chromium security page for more detail. Note that the referenced bugs may be kept private until a majority of our users are up to date with the fix.

Full details about what changes are in this release are available in the SVN revision log. Interested in hopping on the stable channel? Find out how.  If you find a new issue, please let us know by filing a bug.

What about the exploit from Vupen? Will it be patched?

All I can say is WOW! To all who have participated in the recent events and who help to make Chrome and Chromium the best it could be, thank you! It's no wonder that I always come back to Chrome no matter what browser I have installed. BRAVO!

@kostas - Only if Vupen tells Google what the exploit is. Until then you should assume Vupen is shopping it around to unidentified government agencies.

After this update, certain websites will freeze the tabs they are in and will become unusable. The memory for these processes are well above normal. One example is http://www.lifehacker.com/

I am unaware of any workarounds for this. Anyone else having the same issues?

THX for making chrome the best browser in the universe.

@Jason - I am not having the issue described. If you have any chrome flags enabled, try and disable them all and see if the problem re-occur. For me the 'Lifehacker' tab is taking 41.9 MB RAM (and counting...), the GPU Process 34.6 MB and Flash is taking 4.4 MB. 'Lifehacker' is taking 4K memory every 3 seconds. I don't know if this is a bug or not.

@Jason: This website works very good at me ”http://www.lifehacker.com” and I have others 12 tabs opened, the memory is pretty low, although I have only 900 MB of RAM and 128 MB memory of GPU, so there are no issues with Chrome... I think that issue is only in your PC! Best regards!

@Kurt and Anjunabeats,

Thanks for the replies! I typed in Lifehacker.com and it immediately froze and the memory usage is now at 785,520 K with CPU usage at 25%.

I am having the same issues as noted @ http://www.google.co.uk/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=0ad16fe67c6adb16&hl=en

i will continue to find a resolution here. Thanks!

Please Google Chrome is too slow, catching a lot of that was not true, please check this. This started to occur after the last two updates. Thank you!

Maybe this explains how I somehow I have Meebo on the bottom of my Chrome browser today.
I know I wouldn't have added it by choice.

I'm using the Opera browser until all the crashes and freezes Google Chrome in this new version should be corrected because it is impossible to use Google Chrome in this way.

Anjunabeats said...

@Jason: I am running this latest version of Chrome on my both PCs, one with Vista and other with Windows 7 - 32 bits, and everything works perfectly so far, I have opened in Chrome hundreds of web-sites and all was all-right, no blocks, no high memory usage, all works well, so you should CHECK YOUR PC because the issue is more probably in your PC, not in Google Chrome! Regards!

Jason, try to completely uninstall and then reinstall Google Chrome, from here: www.google.com/chrome . Hope this fix your problem!

Anjunabeats The problem is not in my notebook I have an STI 1412 with Windows 7 Intel dual - core and runs lisinho and has 3GB of RAM 32-bit system. Prior to these crashes occur not occur now, not just me that I am facing this problem of freezing does not happen in other browsers like Firefox, Opera, Safari and so on. It's a refresh problem of Chrome does.
