I like the New Tab page :)

I don't like the new New Tap page..

- Its slower to use than the old one (more buttons to click to achieve what you want)

- Never upscale favicons they're still too small on most websites. It just looks ugly.

- Dragging is very buggy at the moment.

- I want the detached bookmarks-bar back. (the one which appeared when you pressed Crtl+Shift+B to detach the default bookmark bar)

Is there already an existing bug to be able to hide all sections and revert to a "blank" NTP like in Chrome 14, or should I file one?

Chris said...

First they take away the bookmarks menu button, now they took away the bookmarks bar on the NTP. Google really doesn't want me to access my bookmarks.

use this switch to get the old NTP back:
--new-tab-page

Why ditch Compact Navigation? Please put it back in Flags.

The new tab page looks more elegant, with 2 exceptions.

The bar at the bottom that lets you switch between most visited/apps/bookmarks doesn't work well with themes. Second, recently closed tabs are much more cumbersome to get to now. Either consider putting them back, or come up with an easier way to access them.

Scott said...

Similar to bsee, but....

I think the options should be at the top of the page (Most Visited // Apps // Bookmarks) as well as the Recently Closed list.

Opening a tab has your interface towards the top of the screen, and you have move all navigation to the complete bottom, and into menu drop downs.

I don't like to have to book mark bar on all the time so i would get to it in the new tab page.... but now thats gone.. The bar at the bottom is just plan ugly and the recently closed is a bother to get to. Also the apps in 3 rows make it harder to find anything... truth be told i think going in an IOS look for the apps (maybe even including folders) would be the right direction... but i dont think this is a good change for the apps. I dont really like that i cant even have a link to my most visited on the app page, now everything is separated and the fast new tab page is now a time waster. Lastly, i'm a little confused why the new- new tab was implemented when theres no bookmarks page.

Love the redesign of the new tab page but, while hovering over the arrows to move between most visited, apps, and bookmarks, scrolling to move between them doesn't work.

Does anyone know what happend to Compact Navigation? Before this update you could enable it under about:flags, but now it's gone.

Recently-closed tabs back under the thumbnails please! They should be something you can immediately access, not an extra click away...

I miss COMPACT NAVIGATION.
Does anyone know if we can manually add it via command-line flag?

How is this new tab page any better than the old one? It takes more clicks to get access to anything I want. Please rethink this.

This new "new tab" is great !!
Its now time to add Chrome as the browser on Android tablets/phones.
In the apps page in the "new tab", can the apps icon sizes be smaller, for clarity, and for getting more icons to fit into one "new tab" ?
From my previous post here, the logo for www.techmeme.com, Outlook web access etc are fuzzy. Please provide better logo creation.

Avinash Agrawal said...

For creating an app in the "new tab", I would like to customize icon of the app.

For example, Youtube logo creation when adding many videos (“Adding to home screen”) on Chrome etc: I tend to add lots of youtube videos as apps, so that they are easily clickable into. But the logos that are created for those videos, are all youtube logos. I would like that for each youtube video, there is a different logo, one that helps identify the video shortcut visually. Please provide this capability. Similarly, if I would like many Chrome bookmarks to various youtube videos, please help create different logos for each of those videos in chrome, so that they are easy to identify.

I actually prefer the new tab page. The only change that isn't working as well for me is the absence of the floating bookmark bar which made it possible for me to not have my bookmark bar visible / taking space all the time. I'm going into "wait & see" mode -- the right-most "bookmarks" section which is "coming soon" might be sufficient when it arrives.

Compact navigation will be sorely missed IMHO. Space on a netbook monitor comes at a premium and although I was initially sceptical, soon I realised I could happily live without an always-on address bar.

Any chance we can have this feature back?

I have been receiving the following error when trying to manually update Google Chrome: "Update server not available (error: 3)." This has been happening since updating to version 14. Has anyone else been having this issue? Also, does anyone have a solution? Thanks.

Google, please understand that to some people Compact Navigation is VITAL. There's no need to remove an "option". Is it really this bothersome to you? Please, bring it back.

I can confirm that Silverlight crashes for Netflix now. Can no longer watch movies.

I'm on the beta channel, but have enabled NOT4 in Chrome 14, and I second Sam's opinion on the NTP4 favicons. Placing the favicon next to the thumbnail title, as it is now in the current NTP, is better.

“App-ify” anthing: Please provide ability to “App-ify” anything, ie something similar to a “Add to home screen” of Google chrome browser, or iPhone or Android phone, ie ability to “App-ify” a google voice contact (for calling anyone with one click) with app showing the contacts photo, or a Blog on the internet (for reaching the blog with one click) with app showing the Blog’s name in the icon, or a Google doc (for reaching that doc with one click) with app showing the Documents name in the icon, or a youtube video for quick viewing with one click(icon that shows a snapshot from the video, not the youtube logo), and so on......

I HATE the new NTP screen.
What are the Google Developers smoking these days?

Take a look at this screenshot:
http://i51.tinypic.com/rjqq86.jpg

Did you notice the strangely super -wide left/right nav buttons on the side of the NTB? Clearly, Google is working on a new tablet, where the user will use their thumb to switch between the sections on the NTB, but really, not even an obese person has a thumb that fat!

You can see that I use half of my widescreen monitor for my browsing. These new pointless nav links are so wide that they reduce the screen real-estate for what is important on the NTB, the thumbnails. It reduces the area so much so that I no longer have an already small 2x4 set of thumbs but I now have 2 columns.

Google, rather than wasting time on reinventing the wheel, why not fix issues that NTP had since version 1? Namely the ability to control the number of thumbs I want to see on the NTB. I may not want 8, I may want 12 or 16 or even 2, whatever the case, you should not decide what is right for my needs.

Also, where are my Pin and Delete controls for the thumbnails?

Is Google Chrome becoming like IE and losing the plot? I hope not. As these stupid issues continue to exist within Chrome, it makes me wonder if people inside of Google actually use their own product; as surely, I can't be the first person to encounter such issues.

Google, in short:

* Please reduce the size of the nav links to a reasonable 32 or 72 pixels wide.
* Allow me to control how many thumbs I can have on the home page.

The use of the native Mac Menu API was a good feature to help with speed but now I have lost the right click ability. Perhaps a hybrid of the two systems would be a better option.

Does anyone else remember when the NTP was good?

Chrome browser shortcuts for specific Chrome Profiles : I have 4 people using this laptop, and would like to create specific windows-desktop shortcuts, with links to Google chrome browser that open up the browser with the Chrome profiles of the 4 people. Currently, when the chrome users click on the generic Chrome browser icon, first chrome browser loads with my profile, and then they have to open chrome windows from there, with their own profile. Ideally, it will be good to have icons showing the photo of the person in the icon, on windows desktop, so that it clearly identifies the profile of the person whose chrome browser will open when the icon is clicked-into. That way, I can have multiple icons (associated with the different profiles) on my desktop for chrome browser.

This is the worst build of Chrome so far, so many memory leaks are happening. Too much memory consumption on mac and windows both. Also hangs quiet frequently..

Avinash Agrawal said...

Dragging a page from "Most visited" tab to "Apps" tab, in "new tab" messes up the icons. Notice the 4 top right icons do not look like the native chrome webstore apps : http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=idvy4w&s=7

Please fix this.

After this update the setting doesn't save and I have a problem with the bookmark sync (I need to change the https setting and when I close the setting values are lost)

Alex said...

2 problems with the new bookmark bar:

1. After the switch to native menus, if you click on one menu on the bookmarks bar then move the mouse to hover over another, it no longer switches to the other menue. Now you have to click once to close the old menue, then click again to access the new menu. I liked it better the old way.

2. If your window is too small and your bookmarks bar can't show all the items on your bookmarks bar, when you click the ">>" icon, you are presented with a menu of your ENTIRE bookmarks bar, instead of just the items that could not fit.

El Cid Mac said...

@Tony - You're right about Silverlight on Netflix, I stand corrected, thanks for your feedback, especially the screenshots to which you posted links, I'm staying away from this and any other Dev releases until the glaring issues are resolved.

Compact navigation is very useful, why did you erase it from the flags panel (and certainly in the command-line) ?!
Currently, Google Chrome is the only browser which have this property, and use it elegantly.
Please restore-it !
