Dev Channel Update

The Dev channel has been updated to 6.0.401.1 for Windows, Linux and Mac platforms

All
  • Don’t prepend scheme on copying an incomplete hostname. (Issue 43585)
Windows
  • Much better display/eliding of RTL and mixed-direction strings in the omnibox dropdown. (Issue 41716)
Linux
  • Make sure scheme is prepended to addresses that are cut (as opposed to copied) from the omnibox. (Issue 43569)
  • Fixed rendering of monospaced fonts on Linux (Issue 43252)

Known Issues
  • Hitting enter in some form fields does not submit the form. This will be fixed in the next Dev release.

More details about additional changes are available in the svn log of all revisions.

You can find out about getting on the Dev channel here: http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel.

If you find new issues, please let us know by filing a bug at http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/entry

Why 6.0?

Java on Chrome for Mac would make it feature complete (for me). =)

Seems a lot faster? Any reason? True or just me?

Thanks for fixing Reddit replies.

I thought I was nuts the first few times but it kept happening. I have gmail, voice and reader pinned and when there is something new in that window some white clouds roll over the tab from right to left until I click on the tab.

Anyone else seeing this or is tequila for lunch a really bad idea?

Archlinux said...

Hey seriously what makes this 6.x? Because it won't prepend scheme on copying an incomplete hostname?

Or is it like just the time to bump the major version number?

GRAY is GAY.
Star should be on the Left.
Ctrl+B = Bookmarks Bar

you make me SAD.

these features should NOT make it into Beta/Stable.

Why GRAY?? is there a reason? did anyone ask for it? -No!

Did anyone complain about the star being on Left? why putting it inside the Address bar that already has some icons ??

Some people own Laptops and Net-books and lack viewing area so it's intuitive, handy, easy and very fast to click Ctrl+b to hide then show B.Bar with 1 hand, why changing it ??

you are being stupid, focus on what's important and bring the life back with the blue bar, Bring back the shiny days of Star on Left, and make our day easier and faster with Ctrl+b.

JESUS!! WHY?!!!

Chris Jones said...

"Why is it 6.0?"

This is a dev version with weekly releases. The Dev tree becomes 6.0 after 5.0 is essentially done and the new 6.0 features then begin to show up and be tested. People keep forgetting that we're pretty nearly running real time for feature additions. They don't add a bunch of features and sit on it as they're doing that for a big "all new features" dev release.

The 6.0 is indicative of what's about to be added in upcoming weeks. Do notice that the 5.0 new features had pretty much tapered off weeks ago.

Renderer processes on Mac now chew up enormous amounts of CPU (2-10% CPU each) doing heavens knows what even when Chrome is not the active app, effectively causing my fan to run continuously at full speed and stealing CPU from the apps I am using in the foreground. This is unacceptable.

Chrome processes should be nearly idle except for scheduled timer interrupts when their respective windows are not receiving UI events.

What happened with Bookmark manager?

Mark said...

@8Ball, Rest assured that these changes are for good reasons. I wont make presumptions as to what they are, but I personally love the gray color and star reposition.

As for ctrl+B, I miss this too but my understanding is that it was conflicting with web apps that require this shortcuts to match user expectations (used for bold font in doc apps etc).

"Why 6.0?"

Because this is the start of the Milestone 6 release.

"Hey seriously what makes this 6.x? Because it won't prepend scheme on copying an incomplete hostname?"

If you haven't noticed, Chrome 6 isn't done yet. It will be in months ahead. Then we'll talk about what warranted the version bump. Like we can do now in hindsight with Chrome 5.

You guys seriously don't understand the Chrome release cycle. Come on!

Adam W. said...

Jonas - can you link to the roadmap you mention?

Per Bylund said...

For some reason, Chrome has never supported logging out of the php-based free hosting software cPanel. Its control panel and webmail alike, logging out shows only the page "you've logged out" but does not really log out. Entering the webmail address again takes the user directly to the webmail service without requiring re-login. This is not the case with any other browser I've tried, so I'm thinking it has something to do with memory and/or parameter handling in Chrome.

Charly NET said...

Hi,

I don't even notice that Chrome became version 6, that's cool, but I would like to know what's the big change, or the feature that make this new version.

I guess is for a WebKit version change, but I don't know exactly.

Thanks :)

Google can you please add more options to the Options dialog?

Stuff like JavaScript specifics enable/disable, more privacy options (don't collect history), master password, etc.

All you did on this 6.0 version were a couple of useless changes for users :/

You have like 100 engineers on Chrome.. it doesn't make sense to not implement the above mentioned features.. only if you really don't want users to have control over the browser!

@Per Bylund: Memory? Parameters? What do those have anything to do with it? Sounds like some sort of cookie handling bug to me.

The MAZZTer said...

@Brad If you want major version numbers with major changes, that's what the Stable channel is for and you are welcome to use it if it bugs you that much. With the Dev channel we see more of the development process, including that some devd will choose to change the major version number when they start development of that version rather than at the end. This is similar to a very early alpha of 6 so 6 makes a sensible choice. At the same time one could argue that it's not finalized so it should be 5. It boils down to personal preference really.

bring back ctrl+b = bookmarks

Seriously, nobody complained about them. Nobody asked them to be moved/removed. It was fine until dev 5 build 395.

Please bring this back!

No major changes in 6, totally annoying? There are my suggestion;
1. Print Preview
2. Good Downloader, speed does not good on my ISP
3. Update to latest Webkit
4. Change colour back to blue, grey sucks
5. Please add two shortcuts:

6. Try to fix more bugs not releasing new version so rapidly.

Gray is just GAY, what happened to all the sky blue days? Even though we can change the color with themes, why make it dull/gay on first site to new users?

One other thing I would REALLY REALLY Love to see in the Auto-fill settings is the ability to add a password (for credit cards, also when filling in credit infos, and all settings) in order to prevent unauthorized changes. Why didn't google even think of this just like they did for other browsers (through their toolbar)?

Please have these small but mighty issues fixed before the next release.

MrElectrifyer said...

Forgot to mention this, could you also add the following shortcut to each and every bookmark folder's context menu

"Sort by Name"

This is a simple yet very useful (experienced in firefox) shortcut, it can save up to 15 seconds or more (depending on how many folders one has)

Please add an option to show the following download bar link in the context menu of downloads

"Remove Download"

and an otion to automatically close the download bar as soon as downloads complete

Mmmbacon said...

@mrelectrifyer

While your groundbreaking "grey is just gay" statement is quite profound and EXTREMELY helpful, have you actually contributed to the chromium project by reporting and starring issues that you dont agree with and would like to see fixed in the manner that you agreed to when you checked the "i agree" box when downloading the dev version of chrome. I hate to break it to you, requesting fixes in the comments section OF A BLOG POST, is not how you contribute to the project. Put some weight behind your "demands" and contribute in the way laid out for this project, and i promise you'll see better results.

ok, I really don't understand what is your problem guys. If you don't like gray, there are A LOT of themes, you can choose from, gray suiting better the windows 7 theme actually, blue was too win xp. The star icon on the right is actually a good thing for me, all the clutter, all the icons are in one place - on the right, not all over the browser. just an opinion.

So when can I download version for Linux?

Влад said...

The RU-ru locale string still says "Unpin tab"(pure English)...

nhnl said...

@Влад:
The string "Unpin tab" is not used in Chrome 5.
When tab is being pinned, a checkmark will be displayed next to menu item.
So there's no translation available now.
That item will be translated 3 months later (for Chrome 6 stable).

which already includes some changes for Chrome 6.
375 branch (currently on Beta channel) will become
Chrome 5 Stable shortly.

Влад said...

@nhnl: How complicated... :)

Vonster said...

You failed to implement all of my prior suggestions, yet you boldly went ahead and increased the version number! Compare that to all the changes that happened going from IE1 to IE2! Don't you know that you didn't implement all of my prior suggestions? The reason you don't offer a simple option to select which side I prefer my bookmarks icon on is because you hate all of your users. I feel I have the right to complain about this because it's not like I'm getting Chrome for free, so spiff it up or I'm asking for my money back. IE doesn't come out with a new release every week, so that means they got it all correct in their first try! Plus, my ISP slowed down thanks to Chrome. My toast was burnt too, and from now on I'm keeping a close eye on you.

Seriously, keep up the good work and feel free to have the version number be whatever the hell you want it to be. If anyone complains, tell them to go ahead and make their own browser and they can number it any way they please...

Tal said...

it is understandable that you would switch versions on the start of a dev cycle.

a better question is then, what is new in v5 over 4?
Since the switch to v6 means that v5 is finalized and will have no new features. So what is the grand total of improvements from the current v4 stable to the latest v5 beta that justify a version bump instead of putting all current v5 features as v4.2 or even 4.5 and then putting all the features planned for v6 in v5.

Tal said...

just to clarify, I know what the actual list of new features are.
they are listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_chrome#Release_history

I was asking rhetorically.

That being said, its not that bad. Version bumping is hardly a capital crime. It seems a bit silly, but chrome is the best browser out there and it has a very rapid development rate. So I can't complain.

hi there,

I'm trying to fix the issues I'm having with the new UI (check my rant earlier):

to get rid or the GAY GRAY I found a simple blue theme similar to default: https://tools.google.com/chrome/intl/en/themes/theme_topography.html

and to add a bookmark use Ctrl+d, I still prefer the Star on Left because websites are written from Left to Right and I have my cursor on the Left side most of the time. anyway..

I still need the Ctrl+b for B.bar, there is no workaround.

Colin said...

@8ball, do you expect anybody to take you seriously by complaining that "GRAY IS GAY"?

If you have a usability comment, such as the Ctrl+B complaint, that's one thing. But bitching about "gay" colors? Shove it, and stop being inflammatory.

I like the gray theme.

How to remove these stupid profiles. Whatever happened to privacy. said...

This comment belongs on a previous entry, but oh well. I just want to say please allow the user the option for which side of the omnibox they want the bookmark button. Personally, I HATE having it on the right, far away from the other two buttons I use frequently (reload and home).

It's really bad at high resolutions, though the whole high-res wide screen issue and how all browsers seem to ignore it, giving us this huge amount of wasted space for the address(omni) box, is a whole other can of worms.

Otherwise, I continue to love Chrome for its simplicity and speed. Just REALLY want to have that bookmark button location reverted. :p

Excellent version: The star is fine on the right. The important functionality (far superior to the star-functionality) is to drag the URL with the mouse into its (sub)-folder of the bookmarks bar and that functionality is implemented at least for the Windows version. For Mac an issue is filed by the Chromium team to add it in the correct manner.

This version works very well. The only caveat I spotted is that when a bookmark is filed by using the star or by dragging that the title of the URL is no longer displayed in the menu of the (sub)-folder of the bookmarks bar.
I hope there is an issue associated with this, otherwise I will request it.

Excellent work: Chrome/Chromium team.
It is very pleasant and fast to work with Chrome
and the extensions make it truly even more unique.

@Peter
It is probably the website you visited that stops the title from displaying.
In my case, no matter how I do the bookmarking, the title of the webpage is always the default name displayed.

BTW, thanks for the info on the drag bookmarking method, never knew that existed.

One new but minor thing I would love to see is the ability to edit (delete, rename, move, reorder by title) an infinite number of bookmarks in the bookmarks menus, without the menu automatically closing. This was experienced in firfox 3.6.3 ;)
