hmm I really liked the idea of http:// truncation and star icon.

I surprised first, but come to think of it, Mysterious http:// is just a useless noise for most users.
Copy to the clipboard works as I expected and for https it still shows it. So I really liked it.

Chrome doesn't allow to be installed in a directory of choice. If it does than not easily. I was able to install both Apple's Safari and Opera in the partition of my choice. The partition Chrome installed in is one that I have no disk space on, thus I could not use it. Moreover, I am not willing to unload programs that have already been installed.

Do you guys plan on fixing the excessive cpu usage with flash and .gif images ?

i've been trying chrome for a past few months now and every time i come back to it, it has the same problem.

chrome uses 70% cpu for .gif where as firefox only uses 10% for the same one.

Flash uses double the cpu in a lot of cases

This is on the mac version....very disapointed

INCOGNITO Mode Problems.

All the problems that I'm about to mention, happen while using incognito mode with Win7 32.

Adjusting the 'Content Settings' (Allow or Block) for a website via the icons in the omnibox, does not work. Also, when you add a website(s) manually into the 'Exceptions..' window of the 'Content Settings', you have to restart Chrome in order for the setting (Allow or Block) for the website(s) to go into affect.
(Content Settings radio buttons for 'Cookies', 'Java-Script' and 'Plug-ins' are 'Block sites...' and 'Do not allow...'.)

Now, this problem has to do with the 'Options' for Extensions. When you click the 'Options' link for extensions, nothing happens. Well... Chrome flickers for a ms, but when you close Chrome, it's process(es) are still running and you have to shut them down through Task manager.

Now this isn't really a bug, more or less a feature request. It's in regards to the 'Bookmark Manager'. Would it be possible to have the option to allow users to view it in a tab instead of a whole new Chrome window? Also, could it accessible in incognito mode too?

Can anyone else confirm these problems and report them?

OH! On an other thing, why the step back to the old UI layout? Well...I know why....(The complaints.) But the thing is, you didn't even give the new UI layout a chance.! And also, isn't that new UI going to be used in a very near future release? Should have just left it, the people would have eventually got used to it, and soon enough they will have too, so you might as well have left the new UI in use instead of reverting back to the old UI.

Anyway, keep up the good work Chrome team!

Boden said...

Why did you give in to all the whining? The last UI (grey colour aside) was far better.

I especially liked http:// being removed.

People said...

What the..., the tab effect is gone? The last version was heading in a good direction, mind you it had some bugs and problems in the Incognito Mode (look at my previous comment), but the cosmetic changes were a good change (the theme color was okay, but it didn't sit well with windows).

pkasting said...

Boden, People, etc.: We didn't "give in to all the whining" -- all the changes, from hiding http to changing the theme color to changing the shortcut keys, will be returning to the Dev channel in a few weeks and we'll have the M6 cycle to tweak, fix, experiment with, and evaluate them. They're merely moving out of M5, that's all.

People said...

Just wanted to echo what Boden said about the whining. You shouldn't have caved. Should have dealt with the complaints now, so you wouldn't have to in the near future, 'cause it's going to happen all over again once the new UI is added.

People said...

@pkasting

Just read your comment, can't wait for the M6 cycle! :-D

Any info on the Incognito problems that I mentioned in a previous comment, any chance that they will get fixed?

Anyway, keep up the excellent work with Chrome!

Thank God you guys undid the silly changes you made to the URL box to the Bookmarks shortcuts.

LZSaver said...

Oh, blue theme, no! Make it silver! :(

Justin said...

do none of you read? all the ui changes are coming back in chrome 6. including all the omnibox changes, color and button changes.

Daniel said...

Here's some ideas for you guys, seeing as you are looking at different ways to tweak the UI.

1. Mix the go, refresh, and stop buttons on the left of the omnibar instead of mixing only the stop and go and leaving refresh it's own button.

2. Make colour optional. Some people liked the silver, some didn't. Make the colour choice the user's choice.

Those are all I have for now. Just a few ideas. I hope you guys take this to heart / at least consider it.

Berkay said...

Can you make Chrome to show the page titles rather than their favicons on the pinned tabs? I have Gmail and Twitter pinned. Whenever I run Chrome, both pages open in the first 2 tabs. Their titles show updates immediately e.g. when there is a new tweet. This way it'll be easier to follow them. Or maybe an animation if the site is updated. There are some extensions doing this job already though.

Ctrl+B=Bookmarks bar [check]keep it this way

Blue/Gray/Silver=Doesn't matter anymore, the browser interface should be minimal, and the focus is on the actual website. that is Chrome.

Star on the Left [check]that is where it needs to be, anyway the shortcut Ctrl+d makes it really fast, but having to go all the way to the Right to change folder/edit name is really a long way (every millisecond counts), should keep it on the LEFT.

anyway, the most important for me is Ctrl+B for B.Bar, because I use it frequently to maximize page view and show B.Bar to navigate to another site, it's a 1 hand job.

Great job, I appreciate what you're doing. Chrome FTW.

Royi Avital said...

You did good restoring the http://.
I didn't like the idea of copying something and pasting something else.

Moreover, in my opinion, the Blue theme is much better.

It would be really nice if, in bookmark manager, the search would be 'live' (search as you type). Right now you have to hit enter to see the result. It would be way better if the search was live while typing (i.e. like the search on windows folders) to support this idea please star this bug:

It saddens me that reverting the idiotic 'remove http://' from the address bar is temporary.

Please keep it the way it's supposed to be. I'll be going back to Firefox if it gets removed again for a variety of reasons:

* It's not standards-compliant.
* Copy-pasting URLs is broken, both normal AND X11 under Linux.
* There's no logical reason to remove the protocol that's currently in use, and it makes no sense that it's displayed when it changes to https:// etc.

Jonas N said...

There's no standard telling the address bar must have "http://" as a prefix. The idea with removing "http://" is to simplify the address bar since it's the most common prefix, and it's never essential to type either. It's the default. The reason it's displayed when changing to "https://" is to make it extra clear that a protocol other than the default/assumed protocol when typing URL's is used.

I don't really understand the criticism. I can agree on that the clipboard contents mismatching the address bar contents can be confusing though. I want the simplicity however, and also the full clipboard contents, because many apps want a "http://" in front to treat it as a hyperlink.

My solution to that would be to use the simplified look when not editing the box, but displaying the full address with prefix and all when giving it text cursor focus, so that you clearly see that http:// is going to be included in the clipboard.

This would preserve the best parts of both worlds in my opinion.

telios said...

If you revert to the last week's user interface (except the only one removal of http://), maybe I will go back to Firefox - 4.0 - as soon as it becomes possible.

Mark said...

Does this mean Chrome 5 is going stable soon? If so I support the decision to hold back the UI changes, I liked them but they did need some work before they could be released.

With all the whining from the Dev channel I dread to imagine the reaction if they'd gone stable!

Juan Carlos said...

The bookmark shortcut Ctrl + B rocks!

Mr Kaylian said...

What a lot of whining about the interface changes! The grey on a blue window looked very classy, and the http truncating makes sense and will probably disappear in all browsers before long. Who needs it, as long as secure sites are flagged as such?

Roll on v6 with the new changes restored again. Looking forward to it (just wish the sheep would stay quiet in their pens).

Szabolcs said...

The UI changes in the last release were great. I'm really disappointed that they have been reverted.

I really loved the more pleasant blue background with the grey toolbar, the star on right, the new tab animation ...

It doesn't matter exactly what kind of visual changes you make, you'll always get scores of angry comments for it. That doesn't mean that people don't like the changes. We just won't jump for the comment box immediately...

Charly NET said...

Charly NET said...

Hi @LG

In middle of comment, a user called @pkasting says that the changes will be back in the Chrome 6 version in just a few weeks :)

And while that happens, the Linux version still has the last UI changes that were removed from this version :P

I'm a linux user in my home (and Windows user in my work), so I'm very happy because I still have them in linux version :)

Meok said...

I must say that I'm surprised all of this discussion has come out of the default theme color. I thought the whole idea of creating the theming system was so people could choose whatever they want the browser to look like, instead of griping about the default theme. I don't see why Google doesn't just release the new grey theme and let people choose it from the gallery without destroying the familiarity of the UI. That's how Firefox got into the sorry state it's in now. They built an extension system but still kept making changes to the default UI instead of just giving people extensions.

Bryan said...

Please remove the padding added to the bookmar bar. It doesn't seem like a lot, but for people who have a lot of bookmark bar items, that extra padding adds up to the point that they don't fit on a 1920x1080 res. screen. Or at the very least allow the ability to manually disable it by choice.

@LG, just do as I have, and download 5.0.375.3 from http://www.filehippo.com/download_google_chrome

@Peter, you think only programmers are right and 'in the know'? As a professional programmer and web developer I disagree strongly, and am pretty sure other browsers will soon follow suit. Also, I doubt Google will give a fig about any plugin you create.

heya,

I have to agree with a lot of others, I actually liked the http:// concatenation/removal, the gray theme, and the bookmark star o nthe right.

It's kinda funny, people who *don't* like things tend to complain more, which is why we got all this noise on the previous thread, whereas people like me who actually liked it didn't come out and have a rant...

And seriously guys, it's Google project, ok. It might be open-source, but they are providing most of the grunt-work. So if they want to make the interface in a certain way, that their perogative. And there's nothing stopping you from forking it, of course or making a plugin, lol, but good luck to you.

Anyhow, it's a nice build for me, I just wish those interface tweaks were back in, but meh, we'll see what happens.

I did notice that Google Docs isn't working for me, for some strange reason (new version). When I try to create a new document, all the menu/toolbars are greyed out, and the "Enter" key doesn't work.

And for some reason, the @ and " key are switched inside of Chrome. Very weird. (They work fine everywhere else).

Cheers,
Victor

Fabio_Rulez said...

@Leonard: that happens if you double click on the link! Instead double click on the row of the link, but not on the link (i.e. in the far right of the page) you will open in this way the link in another tab. another option is ctrl+click on the link to open the page in the background in another tab
