Dev Channel Update: 3.0.187.1

Thursday, June 11, 2009 | 15:40

Yesterday's Dev Channel update (3.0.187.0) for Windows had a critical bug which crashes the browser when you use the wrench or page menus.  This release fixes that issue.

If you already have 3.0.187.0 you cannot get to About Google Chrome to force an update.  You have a couple of choices to get the update.

  1. Wait.  If you wait about 5 hours Google Chrome will check for an update and install it for you.
  2. Uninstall Google Chrome and reinstall from http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?extra=devchannel
The Mac and Linux builds were not affected by this bug so they are not being updated.

We apologize for the problem and we are making changes to our process to try and avoid issues like this in the future.  The dev channel is always going to be a little risky but we agree that major features like this should not go out broken.

@Stanley_Krute: Welcome to the Dev channel where you ARE the someone clicking on things before each [stable] release.

Seriously, why do people sign up for the dev channel when it's known to be buggy. I don't think people some understand what "dev" means.

Tomo said...

Hehe, that was quick fix :)...

For safe reasons I did update, and i did it as usual :/ ... Here is the screenshot to confirm :)

I'm still experiencing frequent crashes unrelated to the menus. It's been happening for the past two releases and is usually triggered when interacting with web sites or managing tabs.

Thanks guys for the quick turnaround on a Dev release!

yeah! fast and quick response... good job... one thing! the download speed don´t appear! it must be visible!

Chrome still crashes intermitently every 5 minutes or so, am using 187.1 now and the crashes are pretty frequent.

Have been using dev channel from the time since you released it however the 187 versions are really very buggy and crashes happen without reasons.

Crashing issues resolved here allowing the browser to auto-update to 3.0.187.1 from 187.0

Nice speed and all options functioning perfectly -- thanks Jonathan & team Chrome!!

So what's idea behind the change of the "download bar?" In an incognito window, the downloads don't show up in the Downloads tab. When you click on "Show all downloads" in the "download bar" at the bottom, a blank Downloads tab opens. Once you close the "download bar," you can't get it back. Once you're in the situation, you can't tell what's going on with the downloads.

Chris said...

@Kristian: HUGE difference between "buggy" and "totally crashes no matter what you click".

The browser crashes every other time I access the Task Manager! Check to see if you have the same issues. This is on Windows 7 RC.

I'm running Chrome on Windows, and I wasn't experiencing any crashes when trying to access the wrench icon, or anything.

Strange, must have only been happening on some people's systems; not all of them.

Miranda Brennan said...

What I don't understand is why I never experienced this problem with the crashing even when using 3.0.187.0, what exactly was causing this?

Hi, I am currently making a theme for Google Chrome.

Themes are very important to the Community.

With Google Chrome,
it should allow us to change the Bookmark Bar too!

Google has this file hidden from us built straight into the code.

"I'm sorry, but the bookmark color is not based on any image, it has been coded to be so by Chrome authors." vHanla

Please make it so that it is possible to Customizable too!

Meok said...

@iDash, work is ongoing with regards to themes. A lot of things are being put in place to make theming easy. I've already raised this issue, as have others and I'm sure Google will let us now when the new API's are ready.

Google should really update

hi there. i updated to 3.0.187.1 and while the showstopping menu item bug seems to be fixed, i tried watching a youtube video and, a couple minutes after clicking a spot in the middle of the video to seek to, chrome crashes. don't know if this is a problem w/chrome's implementation of flash or something else, tho.

Does anybody else got problems with sound in flash players for the lastt 2-3 biulds??

Fabio Turati said...

@Geordon and Miranda Brennan: I'm not 100% sure, but it seems the problem only affected 32-bit operating systems (XP, Vista, 7). Are you using a 64-bit OS?

Emperor said...

Do I got to wait 5 hours without touching anything?

Fabio Turati said...

Emperor: no, you still use the browser. To check what version you have you can simply type "about:version" in a new tab. As soon as you read 3.0.187.1, you're patched. In the meanwhile, consider that only the menu is broken, but the browser works: if you click on wrench -> Bookmarks it crashes, but if you press CTRL+B it works. So you can still do most of the things you normally do, including Incognito, bookmarks, history, downloads.

Emperor said...

Fabio Turati: Thank you, I will wait 2 more hours, I hope I have automatic updates turned on. I can't remember.

Kalpesh Bhandari said...

It is still crashing if we have more than 4 tabs open try to click any menu item.

Fabio Turati said...

Emperor: I'm not sure, but I think the only way to have automatic updates disabled is to install Chrome in a particular way (from the build bot), so it should be ok.
Kalpesh: I can't reproduce it. If you can, please report it at http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=13759

The crash issue from 3.0.187.0 still has some tentacles left in the
3.0.187.1. Today (June 12, Fine Friday) It crashed for 5 times randomly but I couldn't see any specific root cause. Just like that it crashed and asked for the restart.

I skipped 3.0.187.0, but unfortunately 3.0.187.1 often crashes when I open multiple bookmarks in tabs. Out of all folders some open in tabs just fine, and others consistently crash. One of these contains only five sites: Gizmodo, Engadget, Lifehacker, GigaOM, and Download Squad. Can anyone reproduce this? -Joe

Question: I uninstalled 187.1 keeping settings and installed the beta version. Chrome automatically imported IE8's settings, meaning that now many (all?) of my bookmarks are double. I resolved this (deleted all and used transmute to copy IE favs to chrome), but I wonder how I can prevent this problem next time. -Joe

What happend to the popup blocker? Certain sites I need to allow a popup, also I can not send what I type in this window with the latest version..using IE now :(.

Otherwise this build seem sound and FAST! Good work.

PS Looking forward when Print Selection is working..thanks for working on it!

How do I switch off auto updates in Chrome. Google becomes more like Microsoft every day. Releasing critical bugs as updates is bad business and damn inconvenient. Apology not accepted. Get better at your jobs Google. Anyway how do I stop these updates, I'll stick with what works.

Do you know that 3.0.187.X is a DEVELOPER version, don't you? :P

They don't even need to say sorry for bug's inside DEVELOPER's Channel, it's just expected to have a lot of them ;)

Is anyone else eagerly awaiting the next dev release in hopes that all the crashing will be resolved? I had to stop using the last two releases because of it. I'm not complaining; unlike some, I understand what "Dev" means. I just miss using Chrome. Firefox 3 just doesn't compare, not even 3.5 beta.

rjgodoy said...

@Kristian

No. I found 3.0.187.1 is much more stable than 3.0.182 (I discontinued using Chrome between 183 and 187.0 because of its critical bugs, now I feel confortable with it)
