Right-click the Google Chrome shortcut, click Properties, and paste the line above to the end of the Target field.
Note: This should only be used for testing or a temporary workaround to use Hotmail; it makes sites treat your browser as Safari 3. We hope to get the issue with user agent detection resolved with Hotmail so this step isn't needed.

just to let you know that the extra command string you copy and paste at the end of the target field works, provided you PRESS SPACE BAR ONCE, LEAVING A GAP, and then pasting the extra command in at the end.
If you paste it without leaving a space between the end of the target field and the beginning of the extra text you just pasted, then it will not accept and ask you to try again.
I pasted it after leaving a space, and it accepted it and since this update and adding the extra string, Hotmail now works and can finally let me read messages from different folders and even send mails, Thank you for the heads up and hope this little heads up also helps anyone out there that may have been scratching their head for ages as myself.
regards to you all, and can i just say, that Google Chrome is THE browser now that is the king of the browser race lol.

So, i had to open IE to make it work.
I believe you can disable search by simply prefixing what you type in the address bar with "http://". So for instance, if the name of the wireless hostname was "hotelwireless", you would type "http://hotelwireless" into the address bar.

My Chrome (dev channel) was bricked Dec 8th. The quicklaunch icon failed to start chrome. I had to uninstall and reinstall. (Vista 64bit)

Thanks Antony i 'll try that. But it would be really neat if there's a tiny quick button or something. just a thought coz at home i was trying to host a website and chrome kept on trying to search on google for the address that i was supplying only IE was able to work it properly.

1. the hotmail workaround should only have one dash at the front, not two as displayed in the blog post.
2. the hotmail workaround does not allow me to do things to selected objects (ex. deleting messages)
3. i could switch around folders BEFORE the update anyways. now, the hotmail workaround doesn't let me switch folders.
the workaround allows me to read, write, but i can't do actions to selected objects or switch folders.
oh and when i was using the workaround in the shortcut, i closed the browser, and it wouldn't open until i removed that part. currently I'm not using the workaround (all i do is read messages and delete them anyways).
Please fix this; thanks!

I thin'k that this is wrong identifier - first of all KHTML (webkit) were used primary in Konqueror, apple started coop with webkit later. Also identification as Safari is wrong. This should say "Webkit/525.19 (KHTML) Version/3.1" - smart, small and correct.

OK, I can't reply or type anything in my hotmail, so I tried r6482, but it wouldn't accept the change. So I took Welshsimon31's suggestion with the space bar. It accepted it.
I closed the browser and reopened it with the shortcut with the new target. I got into my hotmail, but now it won't register when I selected the message to open. Interesting.
So I reopened the shortcut and deleted the added part.
I don't have the beta version as far as I can tell. Wikipedia claims that version 0.4.154.33 fixed this issue. I have version 1.0.154.36.

@ Andrew - hi andrew, the version you have of chrome - 1.0.154.36 is the first stable release out of beta. They left the actual software patch for the hotmail fix out of that release as its not been tested enough for the stable release. You seem to be on the ordinary channel instead of the dev channel, so if you dont mind having the dev build which is as stable as you current 1.0.154.36, then copy and paste this link http://chromium.googlecode.com/files/chromechannel-1.0.exe
and download the channel chooser, then run the program, and select dev branch.
Then reopen google chrome and click on the wrench (spanner) and click "about google chrome", and it should then say "new release or update available", install the update which should be the current dev release 1.0.154.42. if that all goes well and your then on this release, right click into google chrome short cut on your desktop and select properties, and paste the user agent string :--user-agent="Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US) AppleWebKit/525.19 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1 Safari/525.19" and click apply and you should now be able to switch between folders and compose and send e mail in hotmail. its a bit long winded, but sure is worth doing it, as i am on the dev branch and applied the user agent string in properties, and i can confirm that hotmail is working for me in all manner 1.0.154.42.
!!JUST REMEMBER TO PRESS SPACE ONCE AT THE END OF CHROME.EXE AND THEN PASTE THE USER INITIALISATION STRING!!

as long as you press space once after the chrome.exe part and apply in the target field, it will work.
I can confirm that i am able to switch folders and compose/reply e mails fine using this ammended user agent string!!
I am using dev build 1.0.154.42 of Google chrome and this user agent string seems to work perfect,
i have the dev preview of safari and noticed that hotmail works with no problems and no adjustments (ie user agent string), so i thought i would try it and low and behold it works LOL
